Iowa State coach Matt Campbell saw a chance to grab a triumph that could increase the Cyclones’ likelihood of hitting the Big 12 title game, so he put everything on Purdy.

His bet failed. Parnell Motley intercepted Purdy’s two-point conversion pass with 24 seconds left, and No. 9 Oklahoma hold off Iowa State 42-41 on Saturday night. And Iowa State’s conference title hopes are gloomy.

After Charlie Kolar caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull on the Cyclones down 42-21 in the second half, Campbell went for the victory on the try. Campbell said he didn’t regret going for two since Purdy had passed for 282 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 55 yards and another score.

“When I see Brock Purdy making incredible play after unbelievable play, I’d rather set the game in his hands since I trust him,” Campbell said. “Yeah, the question if I’d do it again — in a heartbeat.”

Their revival was accelerated by the Cyclones two years back on precisely the field with a 38-31 win.

“I thought we had a man open for a second,” he said of this two-point conversion. “We seem like we had a chance to grab the ball, but the guy intercepted it in the end of it. They played very well in the end.”

“You’ve got games like this,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley stated. “You do not want them, particularly once you have an opportunity to separate as we did. But if they occur, you have got to discover a way to triumph in the long run. And I am really satisfied with our boys, our defense, for doing that at the end.”

CeeDee Lamb had 167 yards, and two touchdowns and Kennedy Brooks ran for a season-high 132 yards to help Oklahoma bounce back from a loss to Kansas State a few weeks ago.

Oklahoma set up a showdown next week and extended to 18 games winning streak of November.

Lamb put to a show in the next quarter. On his 62-yard touchdown reception, then he caught the ball around the sideline, then cut across to the opposite sideline. He lowered his shoulder to reach the end zone and then push on Oklahoma’s lead.

The Sooners took control using a 97-yard drive in the third quarter. Brooks completed it with a run that gave Oklahoma a lead.

Purdy connected to trim the lead of Oklahoma to 42-35 Lawrence White intercepted Hurts to give Iowa State excellent field position and set up the final sequence.

Iowa State: All four of the Cyclones’ losses are seven or fewer points. The Cyclones are a play here and there from a particular season.

Oklahoma: The Sooners have questions about their defense and barely hung on.

There may be some space for the Sooners to move up from Penn and Alabama State with losses. Iowa State is a respected competitor, and therefore for playing a close game, the Sooners won’t be downgraded.

The Kolar, who caught the touchdown that put up the conversion that was late of Iowa State, played high school football at Norman North, a little more than the usual 10-minute push from Oklahoma’s Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium.

Kolar’s father, Dr. Randall Kolar, is a professor and head of the hydrodynamic modeling team in Oklahoma. Maria Kolar, his mother, was a professor of law in Oklahoma.

“I don’t understand what Charlie did different with this particular one, but what I do understand is Charlie was outstanding for us this year,” Campbell stated. “I know that’s hard once you come back home. Obviously, for him, there are a lot of ties to this community, to the university.”

Lamb moved into a tie with Mark Clayton for second place in school history with 31 career touchdown receptions. He passed Juaquin Iglesias and moved into fourth place in career yards receiving and has 2,948 yards.

Oklahoma kicker Calum Sutherland is off the group.

Why the movement was made, the decision was affirmed by A school spokesman but did not state. Sutherland, a sophomore, was arrested Sept. 21 on a public intoxication charge and suspended indefinitely. A woman filed for a protective order against him.
